About Esaaouira

A 2 hour drive from Marrakech on the Atlantic coast, Essaouira is famous for long, sandy beaches, a working fishing harbour, windsurfing and a good climate throughout the year.

Recently designated a World Heritage Site the Medina of Essaouira (formerly “Mogador”) does not permit motorised vehicles. The Medina is the original, old, small town surrounded by ancient walls.The current Essaouira was founded by the Portuguese in the 18th century.

Essaouira has been a beach destination among Moroccans for decades. It was also a popular destination among hippies in the 1970’s. One of the most popular visitors from that time was Jimi Hendrix and his spirit still lives in the city.

One of the city’s main attractions is that almost all doors and windows are painted blue and the walls of the buildings are white.The port of Essaouira is another attraction with its many blue fishing boats and local fishermen selling fresh fish on the docks.

Essaouira has become worldwide famous among surfers because of its strong wind. It is possible to rent surf equipment and there are surf schools on the beach. The city of Essaouira is also famous for its souvenirs and many shops. You will find all kinds of beautiful craftmanship.

There are many cafés in Essaouira and there is a relaxed atmoshpere. Cafés sell all kind of drinks but usually not alcohol. The Moroccan speciality is the mint tea with a lot of sugar. The locals call it “Moroccan Whisky”.

Once a year in June the famous Gnawa Festival takes place and the town is full of people and there is music performed everywhere for 3 whole days. Gnawa music is played by people from the south of Morocco and from Sudan and has a complicated and characteristic rhythm. It is said that Jimi Hendrix and many other Western musicians have been inspired by the Gnawa music.

Essaouira is also popular among artists both local and foreign and has a lot of art galleries.

The climate in Essaouira is usually very good. Sunny days with a fresh wind and cool nights. The winter can, however, be rather cold and humid.

Many films have been shot in Essaouira. To mention a few there are: Orson Welles’ “Othello”, “Kingdom of Heaven”, and Bille August’s “Jerusalem”. Most people get to Essaouira from Marrakech or Agadir by bus or taxi since there is no train. The trip takes about 2 1/2 hours in a taxi and costs approximately 60 euros.
